Valentine's Scrooge

As I write this, I am on my way to the beach with my grandparents. We just got out of Walmart and boy was it a madhouse… we nearly ran a few folks over with the buggy. Of course, that could have been my grandma’s crazy buggy driving… hehe, just kidding!
Walmart is so chock full of Valentine’s merchandise now, it’s rather sickening. A whole aisle of pink and red frilly disgustingness. No offense to those of you who adore naked babies who shoot people and overdosing on sugar with enough red #40 dye to give an elephant a sugar rush.
I really don’t have a problem with the commercialism of it all, actually. You’ve probably read a post about this from me before, but my only real problem with Valentine’s day is the pressure. It’s a breeding ground (no pun intended) for expectation, disappointment, and broken hearts. Not to mention it greatly highlights my least favorite color, pink. Yuck.
maybe I'm just doomed to be a scrooge about holidays in general. sigh.

  1. Ok, we agree on a few things here. First of all, pink is a yucky color. So few people look good in pink. And guys who wear pink - (hack, hack, cough, cough)....please, guys, DON"T wear pink! It's the worst. Be a man and wear manly colors.

About Valentines Day -- heck yeah - its overkill. American over-commercializes everything anyway. It's all about the almighty dollar. But for me, Valentines Day isn't just for lovers -- since it IS acknowledged on our calendars as a special day, of sorts -- then it's nice to make a homemade card for your close friend -- or if you're married, then bake something delicious for your hubby - or if you're the hubby, sit down and write out what you love so much about your wife and couple it with a single rose.

I know of a couple that is madly in love...but...the hubby overdoes it -- to the point that flowers don't have any real meaning anymore. Every holiday, birthday and any other day he feels led to, he buys his wife 3 dozen flowers. Now of course its' the thought that matters - and it's nice to know your hsuband thought of you -- but after awhile, getting flowers means less and less -- cuz you get so many.

Personally, if I was in that situation, I'd be saying to my husband, "I greatly appreciate the flowers and that you are thinking of me....but let's take a break from that for some time." (IMagine the expense too!)

I think so often we forget that it means more to sit down and write out your thoughts and feelings, in your own handwriting....rather than go out and buy one of those pink and red cards. Afterall, anyone can buy a card...it takes thought and time to sit down and put something on paper from your heart.

So what do you do for valentines day? Do you bake something? Share your ideas. I could learn a thing or two!
